NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo has joined prediction market platform Kalshi as an investor, becoming the first active NBA player to take a direct ownership stake in the company.

The Milwaukee Bucks forward announced the move on Friday through social media, saying he is now a shareholder in Kalshi. Kalshi later confirmed the investment and said Antetokounmpo will work with the company on marketing efforts and live events.

Kalshi is a U.S.-based prediction market where users can trade on real-world outcomes, such as elections, sports, and economic events. The company said Antetokounmpo will not be allowed to trade on any NBA-related markets to avoid conflicts of interest.

The investment quickly sparked debate online. Some users raised concerns about ethics and fairness, while others questioned whether NBA rules allow players to invest in prediction platforms.

According to a report by The Athletic, the NBA’s current collective bargaining agreement allows players to own up to a 1% stake in sports betting or prediction companies. However, players are not allowed to promote or participate in wagers related to NBA games.

Kalshi said it follows strict rules that prohibit insider trading and market manipulation. The company added that Antetokounmpo’s role will be limited to brand partnerships and public appearances.

Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, is known for investing in businesses outside basketball, including food, technology, and entertainment ventures.
