Many people only focus on changing bed sheets, forgetting that it is their daily habits that determine whether their mattress will last or deteriorate quickly.

To maintain the comfort and longevity of your mattress, check if you are making any of these 8 habits.

Sitting in one position on the edge of the bed for too long.

Many people have a habit of sitting in one corner of the bed to get dressed, put on shoes, or use their phone every morning. Repeating this over a long period of time puts more pressure on that edge of the mattress than other areas, making it more prone to sagging.

To minimize this problem, you should change your sitting position frequently. When rotating your mattress periodically, you should also check the areas that bear the most weight.

Keep your pet lying in one fixed corner.

Putting a dog or cat on the bed isn't a huge problem. However, if the pet always sleeps in the same corner every night, that area will be constantly compressed and wear out faster.

Additionally, pet hair, dust, and residue can make mattresses difficult to keep clean. If you frequently sleep with pets, regular cleaning and rotating of the mattress becomes even more necessary.

Forget to rotate your mattress periodically.

This is one of the most common mistakes. If you sleep in the same position for years without rotating your mattress, your entire body weight will concentrate in one area, causing the material there to degrade faster and noticeable indentations to appear.

Experts recommend rotating your mattress 180 degrees every few months to distribute pressure more evenly. However, you should not flip your mattress over if the manufacturer designed it for single-sided use.

Turn your bed into a play area.

Young children often enjoy jumping on their beds, but mattresses aren't designed to withstand continuous, strong impacts. Using the bed as a "tramp" can reduce the support provided by the foam and spring system inside. Furthermore, this habit poses a potential safety risk for children.

Do not use a mattress protector.

Sweat, body oils, and accidental spills can all seep deep into a mattress without protection. According to experts, a quality mattress protector helps limit the accumulation of moisture, stains, mold, and allergens over time. This is considered a small investment that yields significant results in extending the lifespan of your mattress.

Eating in bed frequently

Breakfast in bed can sometimes be relaxing, but if it becomes a habit, the mattress will suffer the consequences. Food crumbs can easily get caught in the seams, attracting insects and creating a breeding ground for dust mites. If liquids seep into the mattress and aren't dried promptly, the risk of mold growth also increases.

Neglecting to clean the mattress.

Even if your bed sheets are always clean, dust, dead skin cells, and allergens will gradually accumulate inside the mattress over time. Experts recommend thoroughly cleaning your mattress at least twice a year. You can use a specialized vacuum cleaner attachment to clean the surface, then sprinkle a layer of baking soda, leave it for about a day, and then vacuum it up to effectively eliminate odors.

Using an unsuitable bed frame.

Even a good mattress can't perform to its full potential if the bed frame or base doesn't meet the requirements. A proper support system helps prevent sagging and indentation over time. Therefore, before replacing the bed frame or mattress base, carefully read the manufacturer's instructions to choose a compatible replacement.
