Nowadays, with processed foods and sweets readily available, sugar cravings are becoming increasingly common. One of the main reasons is how the body reacts to refined carbohydrates (starches).

Dr. Namratha Upadhya PY, a pediatric endocrinologist at Manipal Yeshwanthpur Hospital (India), said that when you eat a lot of refined carbohydrate-rich foods like white bread, pastries, candy, and soft drinks, your body releases insulin, causing blood sugar to spike.

However, blood sugar spikes quickly but also drops just as fast, making you hungry quickly and easily fall into a cycle of craving sweets to compensate for the energy loss.

Stress and lack of sleep can also contribute to sweet cravings

When stressed, the body releases stress hormones that increase cravings, especially for high-energy foods like sweets. Lack of sleep also disrupts hormones that control hunger and satiety, making you more likely to crave sweets the next day.

Furthermore, cravings for sweets are also related to the brain's "reward system." When you eat sweets, the brain releases dopamine—a feel-good chemical.

"After eating sweets, the brain begins to associate feelings of happiness with sugary foods. So, when stressed, tired, or experiencing negative emotions, you're more likely to reach for sweets because the brain remembers that those foods can provide temporary relief," Dr. Upadhya explains.

How can I control my craving for sweets?

For many people, the key to controlling sugar cravings doesn't lie in strict dieting, but in maintaining a healthy lifestyle for both physical and mental well-being. Experts suggest that it's not necessary to eliminate sugar entirely, but rather to build balanced eating habits, avoid getting too hungry, and keep blood sugar levels stable.

People can adopt the following simple lifestyle changes to control sugar cravings and maintain stable energy levels throughout the day, according to India Today:

  • Eat balanced meals with plenty of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to slow digestion and stabilize blood sugar.
  • Eating at regular times helps the body regulate hunger signals more effectively.
  • Get enough sleep to balance your hormones.
  • Manage stress through exercise or relaxation.
  • Drink plenty of water and stay physically active.
