The Odyssey is the 13th film in Christopher Nolan's directorial career. The film is an adaptation of Homer's epic poem of the same name, revolving around Odysseus's journey home after the Trojan War.
In the film, Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the Greek hero who must confront mythical creatures on his way back to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). The film also features a large cast including Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and many others.
Before its theatrical release on July 17th, The Odyssey had its London premiere on July 6th. “A magnificent and captivating adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, bearing the distinct mark of Christopher Nolan. It’s truly hard to imagine any other filmmaker in the world being able to bring this original work to the screen on such a scale, scope, and emotional depth,” Peri Nemiroff of Collider described the film.
Meanwhile, Variety 's Jazz Tangcay called the film "an incredible achievement" and "a spectacular epic." The writer particularly praised the fight scenes, visuals, and technical elements of the film. In addition, the performances of the cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, and Lupita Nyong'o, were also highly regarded.
Sharing the same opinion, journalist Simon Thompson believes that The Odyssey is a meticulously crafted and spectacular film, living up to expectations for a Christopher Nolan project. He particularly praised Matt Damon's portrayal of Odysseus, noting that the actor delivered a powerful and impactful performance.
Erik Davis (from Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes) also praised Robert Pattinson's performance, saying the actor created a cunning, unpredictable, and captivating character. According to him, Pattinson clearly exploited the villainous aspects of the character, delivering one of the most noteworthy performances of his career.
Besides the acting, the visuals and scale of production of The Odyssey have also been widely discussed. The film is touted as the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
Some critics also expressed surprise at Nolan's inclusion of supernatural elements and horror in the film. Aaron Couch of The Hollywood Reporter commented that this was the first time he had seen Nolan create a fully developed horror sequence in a film. Meanwhile, Steven Weintraub argued that the director's use of mythology and the supernatural was one of the film's highlights.

Previously, The Odyssey sparked controversy due to some of its casting choices, particularly Lupita Nyong'o's portrayal of Helen of Troy. Some viewers felt this choice was inappropriate given the cultural and historical context of the original ancient Greek work, questioning the film's faithfulness to Homer's epic. However, many argued that Hollywood prioritized diversity in casting over adherence to the original source material.
From a production perspective, The Odyssey is also considered one of the most ambitious projects of Christopher Nolan's career. With an estimated budget of around $250 million , the project demonstrates the high level of trust Universal placed in him after the success of Oppenheimer .
It is precisely this enormous resource and wide creative scope that makes The Odyssey a bold cinematic gamble for Nolan at a time when Hollywood is increasingly cautious about original blockbuster projects.
