TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tottenham Hotspur secured their Premier League survival next season after narrowly defeating Everton 1-0 on the final matchday of the 2025/26 season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
Spurs secured a crucial result thanks to Joao Palhinha's solitary goal late in the first half. The victory moved Roberto De Zerbi's team to 17th place with 41 points, two points ahead of West Ham, who finished one place below and are in the relegation zone.
This result also meant West Ham United had to accept the bitter reality of being relegated to the Championship despite their win over Leeds United in their other match.
Meanwhile, Everton finished 13th with 49 points, according to the Premier League's official website as cited by Antara.
Tottenham played aggressively from the start, seeking to secure their place in the top flight. They immediately put pressure on the Everton defense and created several chances in the first 10 minutes.
Conor Gallagher threatened first with a shot that went wide, followed by Kevin Danso's effort which also missed the target.
Meanwhile, Joao Palhinha tried his luck from outside the penalty area, but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
Spurs' dominance continued throughout the first half. Their mounting pressure finally paid off two minutes before halftime, in the 42nd minute.
Starting from a dead ball situation, Palhinha met a cross with a header that hit the post. The Portuguese midfielder then swiftly tapped in the rebound to put Tottenham ahead 1-0.
Entering the second half, the match became more tense with increasingly limited chances. Everton began to dominate possession and pressed hard in search of an equalizer.
However, the visitors struggled to create clear-cut chances and barely threatened Antonin Kinsky's goal.
Tensions rose in injury time when Everton had a golden opportunity through Tyrique George. However, Kinsky produced a brilliant save to preserve Spurs' lead.
Amidst reports of other results affecting the race for the bottom two, Tottenham managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle.
A 1-0 win over Everton ensured Tottenham avoided relegation and will remain in the Premier League next season, while West Ham were relegated to the Championship.
