Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked Rob Edwards and are on the verge of appointing Portuguese coach Cesar Peixoto.

Telegraph Sport understands that Edwards has been informed of the decision by the Wolves hierarchy, despite playing an instrumental role in the recent summer signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez.

Peixoto, who is represented by the Jorge Mendes-owned Gestifute agency, was previously head coach of Gil Vicente and has only managed in the Portuguese league system, outside of a short stint in 2019 with Colombia’s Academica.

Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League last season, during which they sacked Vitor Pereira in November and appointed Edwards with the understanding that the club were likely to be relegated and would need to rebuild next season in the Championship.

Wolves paid Middlesbrough, who were top of the Championship table at the time, £4m to lure Edwards to Molineux.

The shock decision now threatens to destroy the positivity generated by the arrival of two new, established signings.
