England will look to advance into the semi-finals of the World Cup when they take on Norway in Miami on Saturday.
Thomas Tuchel’s men booked their place in the quarter-finals with a heroic 3-2 victory over Mexico at Azteca Stadium on Monday, but the head coach has a couple of selection dilemmas to contend with, particularly down England’s right.
Will Reece James return to the line-up following his hamstring issue and Jarell Quansah’s red card? Will doubts over Bukayo Saka’s fitness play a part in the German’s selection?
Telegraph Sport’s football experts pick the XIs they would like to see take the pitch.
Rogers deserves his chance
Two changes from the side that performed so brilliantly to beat Mexico. Reece James should be fit and should also come in at right-back, which will be a relief to Thomas Tuchel in what has become such a problem position.
As is the other right-sided position where, unfortunately, Bukayo Saka is not fit enough and Noni Madueke’s failure to track back is a problem. Morgan Rogers is more used to playing in the middle or the left but deserves a chance in the team.
Keep faith with Saka
Bukayo Saka just doesn’t feel fit but that said, his assist for Jude Bellingham in the Azteca was worth the inclusion alone. If Reece James is back from injury then he is an obvious choice at right-back although that will be a big call. The team is taking shape now and it’s been a process of adaption for Thomas Tuchel but he seems to have found his XI.
Konsa over James
The big decision for Thomas Tuchel is at right-back, with the England head coach hopeful Reece James will be fit. But even if James is fit, I’d go with Ezri Konsa at right-back and bring in John Stones. My theory is that the best chance of stopping Erling Haaland is to put him up against three of his Manchester City team-mates, including Nico O’Reilly, who know his game inside-out. Konsa also has a good record against Haaland for Aston Villa. Stop Haaland, stop Norway is my rather basic game-plan. I’d hope Tuchel has a slightly more intricate plan than this.
Gordon has earned his place
Reece James is the perfect player to step in for Jarell Quansah from the Mexico line-up. The question is whether the Chelsea captain will be fit. That would be my only change from the team that defied the odds at the Azteca. The centre-backs are now settled as a pair, while Anthony Gordon has to keep his place after his performance on Monday. Bukayo Saka should start if fit.
