A POWERFULl magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook Eastern Samar on Monday afternoon, May 4, 2026, causing people in several provinces to rush out of buildings. The quake happened at 2:09 p.m. and was centered about 20 kilometers northeast of San Julian.

According to Phivolcs, the shaking was felt most strongly in Tacloban City and parts of Eastern Samar, reaching Intensity 5. At this level, the shaking is strong enough to wake people up or cause hanging objects to swing violently.

The tremors were so wide-reaching that students at the National University (NU) in SM City Cebu had to evacuate their building as a precaution. Lighter shaking was also reported as far away as Iloilo, Albay, and even Davao Occidental.

Why it was felt so far away

Experts explained that this earthquake was "moderately deep." While deeper quakes usually cause less damage on the surface than shallow ones, they allow the shaking to travel much further across the islands.

Eastern Visayas is a common spot for earthquakes because it sits on the Philippine Fault Zone and near the Philippine Trench. This makes the region one of the most active earthquake zones in the country.

Safety

Phivolcs is warning residents to stay alert for aftershocks that could happen in the coming hours or days. Local disaster officials are currently checking buildings and homes for any cracks or structural weaknesses caused by the movement.

So far, there have been no reports of major damage or injuries. This event serves as a reminder that because the Philippines sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," being prepared for earthquakes is a part of daily life. LRM
