Then-Miami Dolphins All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a gruesome knee injury against the New York Jets last September. Hill was hospitalized overnight, and it was revealed that he had torn “multiple ligaments, including his ACL,” per ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques.
In February, the Dolphins released Hill, who turned 32 in March. He remains a free agent — his first foray into NFL free agency — and rumors have persisted that Hill could return to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce gave fans hope, whether false or legitimate, by commenting on Hill’s latest Instagram post showing where he is physically 10 months removed from two surgeries. His video snippet is from the latest episode of his “The Cheetah, Reborn” YouTube series.
“Keep going brotha! [flex emoji, fire emoji]” Mahomes wrote, while Kelce chimed in with three cheetah emojis and three fire emojis.
In the video, Hill says, “You know, they told me I may not be able to walk again, and the doctors [were] like, ‘Bro, we don’t know what’s gonna happen with your future.’ And now look at me.”
Hill later discloses that he still has “no power” in his left leg, but he’s taking it “one day at a time.”
The Chiefs selected Hill in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He emerged as a 1,000-yard receiver with quarterback Alex Smith, and he took off to another stratosphere of NFL star once Mahomes took over in 2018. Hill, Kelce, and Mahomes quickly became the league’s definitive high-flying offense, and at the conclusion of the 2019 season, the Chiefs won their first of their three Super Bowls with Mahomes.
The Chiefs shocked the NFL by trading Hill to Miami in March 2022. Hill cemented his individual greatness away from the Chiefs and Mahomes by elevating then-Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and helping turn the Dolphins into winners. Hill posted 1,710 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022, followed by an NFL-leading 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023.
Hill’s production dipped over the past two seasons. He logged a still-respectable 959 yards and six touchdowns in 2024 before his 2025 campaign was limited to four games last year.
If the Chiefs, or any NFL team, has interest in adding Hill, it seems he won’t be a viable option until well after the 2026 NFL season begins.
