A video showing a homeowner peeling back carpet to reveal a colorful tiled floor has gone viral on TikTok.
The post, shared by user @houston11242, has garnered more than 76,000 views since it was shared on January 14.
Text overlaid on the clip says: “When we first viewed this house, I was convinced there was treasure hiding underneath this carpet.”
The video shows a homeowner lifting a section of carpet to expose bright, patterned tiles beneath. The caption of the post says: “LOOK what i found!!!! #hiddentreasure #oldhome #homerenovation #homevlog #restoration.”
The clip highlights how older homes can conceal original features beneath later renovations.
The post comes at a time when home renovation spending has dramatically increased. According to a survey by Houzz, a home design website, median renovation spending surged 60 percent between 2020 and 2023, rising from $15,000 to $24,000 in that period.
The survey found that Generation X spent the most on home projects in 2023, with a median spend of $25,000, compared with $24,000 for Baby Boomers. “The top 10 percent of spenders in these groups had substantial project budgets, with Gen Xers at $180,000 and Baby Boomers at $131,000,” the report stated.
According to a report by Grand View Research, the global residential remodeling market size is projected to reach $3.67 trillion by 2030, with the market in the United States growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6 percent over the forecast period.
The report says: “Many homes in the U.S. are over 30 years old, necessitating updates and repairs to maintain their functionality and aesthetic appeal. This aging housing stock prompts homeowners to invest in remodeling projects that improve energy efficiency, increase home value, and enhance living conditions, thus propelling the industry demand.”
