Owner Unprepared for What Dachshund Has Done to Couch When No One’s Looking

When a dachshund in Singapore decided to carve a tunnel into her family’s sofa, her owner had no idea the destruction would soon leave millions of viewers online in stitches.

A video showing the tiny dog peeking out from the resulting hole in the couch—revealing a hidden burrow inside—has since gone viral, amassing more than 1.6 million views on Instagram. The clip, shared under @hershey.chocodog on February 7, documents the unlikely home renovation carried out by Hershey, a nearly two‑year‑old chocolate and tan dachshund whose persistence turned the piece of furniture into her own personal hideaway.

Edited with dramatic reality TV‑style music, the hilarious clip shows Hershey poking her head through the sofa before revealing the full extent of the damage: a tunnel large enough for her to crawl into and sit inside.

An overlaid text reads, “POV: [Point of view] My dog dug a tunnel in our sofa.”

Hershey’s owner, Mei Kit, told Newsweek the transformation was the result of a long‑term effort.

“Her ‘long-term project’ of digging a hole in our couch happened over a few months,” Kit said. “It started with her nibbling at the fabric, and slowly she went deeper consistently until she created a hole.”

Kit, who is based in Singapore and works as a realtor, said Hershey is turning two in April and has always had a strong personality.

“She’s always been very active, cheerful, and full of personality,” she said. “Everyone who meets her usually thinks she’s just a cute and petite little girl, but she’s actually very feisty and incredibly determined.”

That determination meant attempts to stop the damage were unsuccessful. Kit said she tried sewing cloth over the chewed area to patch it up, but clever Hershey broke through again.

“At first, I was quite upset, but eventually I accepted that this was her masterpiece,” she said, adding that she even documented the damage with photos.

While the couch itself could be replaced, Kit said her primary concern was safety. As Hershey dug deeper, she reached the wooden board inside the sofa, creating wood chips that could pose a risk for the canine and her family.

Hershey also treated the tunnel as a private den, bringing her toys inside and hiding there “like it was her little secret space.”

The Instagram post’s caption leaned into the humor of the situation, joking: “I bet your dog can’t do this.”

It explained how, over time, Hershey “bit off the exterior and layers of sponge right before the wood board, turning the sofa into a burrow tunnel for herself.”

Kit said she ultimately replaced the couch with one made from a sturdier fabric that is harder to bite or pull, hoping it would discourage any future projects.

“‘Pet-friendly’ fabric is not enough for us,” the caption added, followed by laughing emojis.

The post quickly resonated with viewers, attracting more than 105,000 likes and a flood of amused comments. Many people shared their own stories of dogs—and even cats—destroying furniture in creative ways. Others said they immediately suspected the culprit was a dachshund.

For Kit, that reaction highlighted the breed’s reputation.

“It was also funny seeing comments from people who said they knew it had to be a dachshund,” she said. “It really shows how this breed is known for being chaotic and determined little diggers.”

What began as a hidden household headache has since become a lighthearted online moment, with Hershey’s secret sofa tunnel serving as a reminder of how a dog’s mischief can unexpectedly bring millions together.
