One prominent athlete and his family recently had a wonderful time at a Los Angeles Dodgers game, thanks in part to the hospitality of manager Dave Roberts.
Derek Carr, the former quarterback for the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders and the New Orleans Saints, came out to Dodger Stadium for Tarik Skubal’s home debut for the Boys in Blue.
While there, he and his family were suffering from the persistent heat that’s affected Los Angeles for the past few weeks, but Roberts came to the rescue.
“Shoutout to Dave Roberts. We are at a Dodgers game and he noticed my wife holding our newborn and kids in the heat during batting practice and invited us into his office to cool off for 30 minutes,” he wrote on social media. “A genuinely kind person. Thanks Dave. Go Dodgers.”
Derek Carr’s History With the Dodgers
Given Carr’s childhood, his Dodgers fandom wasn’t assured, as he had plenty of chances to grow up a fan of the San Francisco Giants or Houston Astros.
He was born in Fresno in Northern California and played for Fresno State, and he also spent time growing up near Houston, Texas, as his brother, David Carr, was the quarterback for the Houston Texans.
He also spent the bulk of his career in Oakland and then Las Vegas, something the Athletics are now doing.
Despite those factors, it appears his younger years (and senior year of high school) in Bakersfield, located just a couple of hours north of LA, locked in his Dodgers fandom.
He even owns a key piece of Dodgers history: the second base that was the site of the game-ending double play in Game 6 of the 2025 World Series.
And as if he needed another connection to the team and to Roberts, Carr recently joined the UCLA Bruins football team as a special advisor to coach Bob Chesney.
Carr now will make his mark on UCLA athletics just like Roberts, a prominent former Bruin himself.
