As many anticipated, former No. 1 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals, quarterback Kyler Murray agreed to a one-year deal on Thursday with the Minnesota Vikings after being officially released on Wednesday.
Murray to Minnesota had been a topic of conversation for several days regarding where he might end up once he entered the free agent market, and it didn’t take long after visiting the organization for him to agree to a contract for the 2026–27 season.
With him already in the building, he addressed the media and revealed that he actually grew up a fan of the Vikings, even though he was raised in Bedford, Texas. Murray even confessed he “cried real tears” when Brett Favre threw the costly interception in the 2009 NFC Championship Game against the New Orleans Saints.
“Ever since I started playing tackle football,” Kyler Murray said when asked how far back his Minnesota Vikings fandom goes. “I was seven years old. Genuine, genuine fandom — a lot of purple in my household. I cried real tears whenever Brett Favre threw that interception.”

“Story of every kid in Minnesota: watching Brett Favre throw one, wiping your tears, and hoping next week’s game will be better,” a fan said.
Someone else added, “He knows what it means for us to win our first Super Bowl.”
Another person wrote, “He is the chosen one.”
“Me too, Kyler Murray, me too,” one more fan commented.
Now, Murray will have the opportunity to try to lead the Minnesota Vikings, who very recently went 14-3 in 2024 with Sam Darnold at quarterback. If Murray performs well, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Vikings could return to being a legitimate threat in the NFC North.
However, Murray will likely still have to beat out J.J. McCarthy for the starting job, as McCarthy enters his third season after being a first-round pick in 2024.
