Geno Smith is looking to make the most of his career coming full circle in his return to the New York Jets.
The 14th-year quarterback started his career with the Jets as a second-round draft pick in 2013. Smith didn’t pan out the first time around, but he returns after a successful stint with the Seattle Seahawks and an up-and-down 2025 with the Las Vegas Raiders.
“You know God has blessed me to be able to play this long,” Smith told reporters on Tuesday. “Every day I get to go in this locker room with my teammates to be coached by great coaches. I’m truly humbled by it.”
“I don’t look too far ahead. I know it’s a lot of work to be done,” Smith added. “I’m truly focused on making sure we do the right thing, as far as the process goes, and let everything play out.”
Smith joins a Jets team that hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 2015, and that included two lost years with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2023 and 2024. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn couldn’t get things turned around with a 3-14 mark last year, but Glenn is looking to Smith to get the offense on track after a quarterback carousel in 2025.
“I believe we have not only the right guys in the locker room, but the coaching staff and the front office,” Smith said. “There’s a lot of things to be positive about as a Jet fan, as a player, and as a part of the organization.”
Smith will work with new offensive coordinator Frank Reich, and Smith expressed that he believes in Reich’s system and what the offense can do. Smith will look to get the most out of offensive stars such as wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall in addition to the team’s supporting cast.
“I expect us to go out there every single day and be who we are, a team full of hardworking men who love the game,” Smith said. “Love of talent on this team.”
