The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Houston Rockets on Friday night in a marquee matchup featuring two of the league’s top All-Stars, Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant.
A battle between the 37-year-old Durant and the 24-year-old Edwards saw KD emerge as the top scorer, finishing with 33 points on 13 of 18 shooting. “Ant-Man” had a respectable 22 points, which is a far cry from what he’s capable of achieving.
However, he nailed a stepback game-sealing 3-pointer for his squad in a 136-132 victory, handing Houston a loss ahead of the postseason.
While Edwards achieved the win, Durant achieved history, as he officially scored his 2,000th point of the NBA season. With that, he passed the legendary Karl Malone as the oldest player to score that many in a season.
It may have prompted Edwards’ postgame request to the Rockets star, as he was looking to exchange jerseys, something that has risen in popularity over the years among NBA and NFL players.
Cameras caught the postgame interaction involving Edwards and Durant. The Timberwolves star started to remove his jersey, but KD appeared to shut down his request in a funny moment.
Adding further humor to the situation was Durant seemingly roasting Edwards for gaining some weight, which may have occurred as he was out for at least 20 of his team’s games this season. In his previous seasons, he played no fewer than 78 games.
Following his jersey swap fail, “NBA on Prime” sideline reporter Christina Pink asked Edwards what was going on and why he wanted Durant’s jersey if he already had one.
“I got a couple already. I wanted another, though,” Edwards said, with Pink laughing over his response.
The Timberwolves star didn’t elaborate on why he needs multiple Durant jerseys in his collection, though. One has to wonder how many jerseys he has and which player he has accumulated the most jerseys from.
Both teams will wrap up their regular-season schedules on Sunday, with Edwards and the Timberwolves hosting the New Orleans Pelicans, and Durant’s Rockets hosting the Memphis Grizzlies. As of this writing, the Rockets are the No. 5 seed, with the Timberwolves at No. 6 for the postseason.
Depending on how they perform in the playoffs, there’s always the potential for another meeting between Edwards and Durant in the postseason, which could allow Ant-Man to attempt another jersey swap, unless he doesn’t want to face further humiliation.
