Dogs often develop quirky habits on their daily walks, but the unusual reason why an Alaskan malamute has to check every drain he passes has melted hearts across the internet.

Dog owner and Pilates instructor Christina Ibarra (@tina__ibarra on TikTok) shared the adorable footage of her malamute, named Dumbbell, skirting around a street drain and peering earnestly into the grate. In text layered over the clip, she explained that Dumbbell “once found a chihuahua in a drain,” so now he feels compelled to “check every single one, on every walk.”

Since being posted, the video has touched viewers around the world, amassing more than 6.9 million views and 1.8 million likes at the time of writing.

Newsweek has contacted @tina__ibarra via email for comment. We could not verify the details of the video.

Alongside the clip, Ibarra affectionately joked that Dumbbell is “the sweetest floof,” and many viewers seem to agree. She explained in a follow-up TikTok comment that Dumbbell “would not leave” the drain at first, and then it suddenly became clear that the chihuahua was stuck down there. She added that “the owner was so grateful” for Dumbbell’s help finding the small dog.

Dumbbell’s gentle vigilance also aligns with the well‑documented temperament of Alaskan malamutes. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), malamutes are known for being affectionate, loyal, and playful, with a natural inclination toward teamwork and a history rooted in working closely alongside humans. They are described as immensely strong, heavy-duty workers whose family‑oriented pack instincts make them deeply bonded to their humans.

Their history also plays a role in their searching tendencies. PetMD notes that malamutes were originally relied upon by Alaska’s Mahlemut tribe to hunt seals, scare off polar bears, and haul heavy loads, demonstrating both problem‑solving ability and a strong work drive. These traits can manifest today as curiosity, alertness, and a desire to investigate their surroundings—making Dumbbell’s drain‑inspecting routine perfectly on brand for the breed.

While malamutes are impressively powerful, they are also known for their nurturing and dependable nature. AKC describes them as affectionate with family and deeply devoted, characteristics that may help explain Dumbbell’s lingering instinct to ensure no small animals are in distress.

Across the internet, viewers have fallen in love not only with Dumbbell’s sweet ritual of checking drains but the reason behind it too. The viral clip has prompted over 4,500 comments, many of them expressing admiration for Dumbbell’s kindness.

One TikTok user wrote: “What a beautiful soul! He’s the OG Paw Patrol.”

Another joked: “He thinks that’s where chihuahuas come from.”

Another comment reads: “Thank you for being patient with him and letting him check every single [drain].”

Meanwhile, another viewer quipped that Dumbbell was simply “checking the friend dispensers.”

Whether driven by instinct, memory, or sheer compassion, Dumbbell’s commitment to drain‑checking has turned him into an unexpected online hero—and a shining example of the malamute’s remarkable blend of strength, intelligence, and heart.
