Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson has played perfect defense for 111 consecutive games.
After another errorless game against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, Wilson now holds the MLB record for longest errorless streak at shortstop.
Wilson’s last error was more than a year ago on July 6, 2025. He passed former Baltimore Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick’s 110 game streak he set in 2002. Wilson’s defensive efforts helped the Athletics win their first series since winning two of three games against the Colorado Rockies in mid-June.
“It’s a special day for me, but at the end of the day, we got our first series win in a long time against a great opponent,” Wilson said, per MLB. “We’ve got to keep that ball rolling.”
Wilson’s Teammates Praised His Defensive Abilities
In just the third MLB season of his career, Wilson and his defense have earned the trust of his teammates.
Infielder Tommy White said Wilson is reliable at shortstop. He explained how Wilson is not only fielding the balls well but he also makes accurate throws that help out White, who plays first and third base.
“He definitely has the consistency side of things down pat,” said White. “The stats don’t lie. … He really takes in the second half of the play. Everyone sees the glove, but it’s the accuracy of the arm.”
Rookie starting pitcher Gage Jump said having Wilson at shortstop makes him feel more confident when he is on the mound.
“He makes amazing plays,” Jump said. “It’s great having defense like that behind you. It kind of takes a little bit of stress off your back.”
Second baseman Donovan Walton recently joined the Athletics on July 12 after the franchise claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Just a month into his stint with the Athletics, Walton is impressed by the 2025 All-Star’s defense.
“He’s fun to watch and makes incredible plays,” said Walton.. “Even ones that are tough to get to, he makes them. … It’s been impressive to watch ever since I got here.”
