Fulham consider other striker options
Fulham are exploring alternative targets as uncertainty continues to surround a potential move for Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Garcia. The 22-year-old had been identified as one of the attacking options discussed by Alvaro Arbeloa, who has worked with Garcia both in Real Madrid’s academy and during his time as interim manager. However, any approach is complicated by Real Madrid’s apparent reluctance to sanction the player’s departure. Fulham remain eager to add a striker after Raul Jimenez left the club on a free transfer to rejoin Wolves.
The Cottagers had also looked at PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi late last season, but eventually withdrew from negotiations. That decision has left the west London club continuing their search for a reliable centre-forward. Garcia’s profile had made him an attractive possibility, particularly given his experience within one of Europe’s leading academy systems. Yet Fulham may now need to focus on players whose clubs are more willing to negotiate.
Real Madrid’s homegrown quota concerns
Real Madrid’s hesitation over Garcia is reportedly linked less to his immediate place in the attacking hierarchy and more to UEFA registration requirements. Champions League squads can contain a maximum of 25 players, with eight places assigned to locally trained players. Four of those players must have been developed by the club itself. As a graduate of La Fabrica, Garcia carries significant value in helping Madrid meet that requirement without using one of their unrestricted squad places.
With the Madrid squad undergoing further changes and several academy products linked with potential exits, the club are said to be taking a cautious approach. Losing another homegrown player could leave the Spanish side with fewer options when finalising their European squad list. Reports have also suggested that Marc Cucurella’s arrival is viewed internally as useful in reducing pressure on locally trained-player places. Even so, Garcia’s academy status gives him a practical importance beyond his role on the pitch.
Mourinho to assess Garcia’s role
Jose Mourinho is understood to rate Garcia highly and is keen to retain the striker in the Spanish capital for the time being. The forward is expected to be assessed closely during pre-season before a final decision is made on his role. His performances over the coming weeks could therefore be decisive in determining whether he remains part of the first-team plans. For Fulham, that means a quick resolution appears unlikely.
A permanent exit has not been completely ruled out, but Real Madrid’s position could change only if they bring in more players who meet UEFA’s locally trained criteria. Additional qualifying signings would provide greater flexibility and could make it easier for the club to consider a sale or loan later in the window. Until then, Fulham are likely to keep monitoring the situation while progressing discussions over other striker targets. Strengthening in the final third remains a clear priority following Jimenez’s departure.
