Anthropic announced Sunday that it is pledging 5% of its stock to a newly established "public benefit" fund, an asset whose value may grow as the firm’s shares appreciate.
These holdings will flow into the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new division created within the organization.
The fund "will have increased flexibility and scale, enabling us to pursue our mission in new ways: for example, we might explore large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations," the business stated in a blog post.
Addressing labor market impacts, it noted that although it has designated $200 million to study the consequences of artificial intelligence, "given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed."
CEO Dario Amodei and five other cofounders established Anthropic as a public benefit corporation, a classification for for-profit companies that balances financial targets with social impact.
They have also pledged to donate 80% of their wealth. An equity match program, involving roughly half the company's workforce, enables employees to pledge stock that Anthropic matches.
Alongside Sunday's announcement, Anthropic said about 20% of its shares will go toward the "public good," plus any additional percentage if valuation milestones are met.
Anthropic is planning a massive initial public offering as soon as November.
