Tsutomu Shibayama, known for his decades-long work on the beloved “Doraemon” franchise, has passed away. He was 84.

In a statement published on its official website, animation studio Ajia-do confirmed Shibayama's death, saying he died on March 6 due to lung cancer.

Shibayama was a key figure in Japanese animation, directing the “Doraemon” film series for more than 20 years and serving as chief director for the long-running television adaptation of the iconic robotic cat from the future.

Before and beyond “Doraemon,” Shibayama also worked as animation director on classic series such as “Dokonjo Gaeru” and “Ganso Tensai Bakabon.”

He later directed and served as general director on several other popular titles, including “Nintama Rantaro,” “Chibi Maruko-chan,” and “Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori.”

“All of us at the company express our heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and warm support you extended to us during your lifetime,” the animation studio said.

Shibayama’s funeral was held privately with only close family members in attendance, in line with the family’s wishes.

The company also asked the public to refrain from sending flowers, monetary gifts, or condolence visits.

A memorial service is being planned and will be announced at a later date. — Carby Basina/LA, GMA Integrated News
