Star Fox 64 remake revealed for Switch 2 in surprise Nintendo Direct

Surprise! A fresh Nintendo Direct went live today with mere minutes of advanced notice, detailing the long-awaited next entry in the Star Fox series. Titled simply Star Fox, it's a remake of Star Fox 64 coming to Switch 2 on June 25, 2026.

The footage in the Direct shows levels virtually identical to the original Nintendo 64 game, albeit with a much, much fancier graphical treatment. The Star Fox crew have all been completely redesigned in a way that I'm sure is going to cause debate in the fandom, but they're true to the puppet-style aesthetic that defined the series' original visual identity.

Other than the new visuals, this will seem very familiar to Star Fox 64 veterans, as you'll still carve a path through a series of missions, looking for alternate paths to new levels as you blast through a mostly linear campaign. Between missions, you'll see new briefings that give you more time with the crew and fresh bits of Star Fox lore.

There are new difficulty settings this time around, as well as a challenge mode that lets you replay stages with bonus objectives you won't see in the campaign. And yes, the multiplayer battle mode is back, here appearing as an online mode offering 4v4 dog fights across three stages. As an extra bonus, you can also use mouse controls for aiming.

This announcement was previously rumored for April, but I guess Nintendo has decided to keep the leakers guessing. Either way, Star Fox fever abounds right now after Fox's appearance in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it seems Nintendo wants to make the most of the character's introduction to a whole new generation of fans.

Here are all the upcoming Switch 2 games you need to know about.
